a prayer well

well, my grandmum had a prayer well.

 

When she would pray, 

she would draw water, clear cold water from a well

and pour it into her beauty vase

and set a flower from her yard

a bud of a rose

a chrysanthemum

even a dandelion

in the clear crystal vase

 

and set it down on her stool table 

then kneel to pray

 

a cross is hung over the furnace in the living room

and the autumn leaves are abundant on the ground outside

all around the prayer well

 

where grandma draws water 

to set before the cross in a vase

and pray

 

 

it's autumn time

and the prayer well still sits 

where it used to be 

in grandma's time

 

 

a structure

well grooved in mine heart.

 

and a tradition I am pondering on keeping kneels on my heart today

and I look outside and look upon

 

the grandma's prayer well.
